This project is a proposal for the identity of the YMT Magazine vol. 2

Ymt is created in an Editorial design course with second year BA students of Visual communication, who work with content from academic staff at KMD, and MA alumni. Ymt is a magazine designed and published by Bachelor Students, who each year works on developing a new visual identity and a new edition of the magazine, both printed and digital.

We started of this process by finding our own meaning for the word ymt / hint and building the identity based on this. My definition of the word ymt was "Express indirectly what one prefers not to say explicitly" this we brought on and built a visual identity from. Eventually the identity itself was also inspired and based on the moving "ball" and much of the inspiration for both colors and shapes comes from there. The soft, organic ball, which at the same time turns out to be something a little hidden and mysterious about it. It shines forth, but not clearly, and provides a hint of something, something movable. Movement was an important word when we worked out this identity, we wanted to convey something, bring forward our subject, make it more visible. Ymt is aimed at our subject, visual communication, graphic design and illustration and how we can create a dialogue between us.

With this identity we tried to visualize the hidden and mysterious thing about a hint, but we also used clear, strong colors to make the hints shine forth and illuminate the content. The header text and font we chose is called Nasa Regular and was chosen because this font communicates well with the logotype and has qualities we looked for in our identity. Given the size and format we decided, we chose a well-readable font and one that stands out a bit from the header text, but still retaining some of the same shapes, we chose the IBM Plex Sans font.

An animation became a natural choice for us considering that we were working with movement, and we wanted to use small animations both in web context, social media and for the magazine's release party.

This is the latest version of our contribution to this year's YMT, YMT 2020:
